What a great few weeks in our classroom.

We are coming to end of of our study about Rivers and dams. The class will collect their findings and decide how a dam would affect Portland and the river ecosystem. Following the study of the river the students will focus on topics they have expressed interest in throughout the month of March.

In conjunction with the river study we welcome educators from the Columbia Slough into the classroom. They taught the class about the watershed before our trip to Kelly Point Park.
It was a beautiful, misty morning along the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. The class looked for animal tracks, tested the water and talked about the watershed.
Thank you for the volunteers who drove and made that trip happen.

In Math the class has been working on creating arrays as a way of helping them understand adding, multiplying and division problems. The students have also been engaged in making projects from recycled items. This process has been open ended allowing the students an opportunity to think carefully about elements of design. It also provides them to see how measurements and adding are used in practical applications.

We have been talking a lot about racism, segregation and famous African Americans as we’ve been celebrating African American history month. While these conversations are a continual part of our classroom this month we will focus even more on these ideas.

The class has been studying and practicing writing different styles of poetry. This unit will culminate with an Author’s Tea where you will have a chance to hear the great writing individuals in the class have written. I will also put their poetry collection together in a book for you to treasure.

I am so happy that our new tables have arrived at the school and are waiting to be put together! I thank you all for your donations to make this happen.

Thank you for your book orders! They should arrive next week. I will send home another flier in March or April  if anyone is interested in more books.
